Border fence building.
The Minutemen plan to fence some border sections that are abutted by private property if we don't do something by May 25. We all know nothing will be done, so hopefully the minutemen can build their fences and bring some more attention to this problem.
In this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlates...767563,00.html The Minutemen say they can build a double fence w/ razor wire and a vehicle trap for $150 a foot. GOt me thinking.... The border w/ Mexico is about 1510 miles. There's 5280 feet in a mile, so the border is about 8 million feet long. At $150 per foot, the cost is about $1.2 billion, or less than a tenth of NASA's budget. If the minutemen are wrong by a ton, it's a $3 billion fence. The government already owns a ton of the land at the border, so there would only be the issue of "right of way" at places where private parties own the land abutting the border, and I think I'm OK with emminent domain being asserted there if the landowner is not in agreement with allowing the fence. Figure another couple billion dollars for land purchases from those parties who won't allow the fence on their property. The "fence" as described is really two fences with a patrol road/ clear area between them so it would mean property owners would lose like 20 feet of their land at the border. So, overall tally: Fence cost (bad case) $3 billion Freebies (from cooperative land owners) $2 billion Emminent domain claims (buy land for the fence where neccessary) $3 billion Total: $Priceless. No, a paltry $8 billion. Granted this is an oversimplication of some issues, but by some estimates we're spending $200 million a day in Iraq, over $250 billion so far... $8 billion seems cheap by comparison. I guess this is just more proof that the reason no steps have been taken to control our border is that the goverment doesn't want to? You see any obvious things I'm ignoring cost wise in this line of thinking? I keep getting a mental picture of Joe taxpayer bound and gagged, tied over a barrel while Vicente Fox, sporting a twisty moustache, a sombrero and needing a shave has his way with him and mouths "Badges, we don't need no steenkin' badges"... Could I be thinking too much about illegal aliens? |

Re: Border fence building.
what if the only easement to said private property is against the border?
What do you suppose the cost of digging a tunnel under the fence using illegal mexican labor from the other side would be? |

Re: Border fence building.
Don't follow you. That would be good. You'd end up w/ the tank trap pit on the border then fence 1, 15 foot road on easement, and fence 2. The 'road' is just dirt-- if they had to dig it up for utilities or something, no biggy.
More than walking across on foot. Also, having a controlled border would make patrolling it easier and would therefore free up some manpower for looking for tunnels. You're also not going to move nearly as many people through tunnels. |
