Read up on your Clausewitz and Ludendorff. Total War works. Our appaling lack of courage in which to conduct it is the reason we haven't won a war since WWII.

Also read up on Operations Olympic and Coronet. The Purple Heart medals we still hand out today were made in 1945 in preparation for those landings.
